To work out the smallest sprocket that can be used with a given chainring, multiply the number of teeth on the chainring by the wheel circumference and divide it by the appropriate distance from above. For example: riders 12 or 13 years old with a 42 tooth chainring and 700c wheels, the smallest sprocket they can use is one with 15 teeth:
42 x (0.7 x 3.14) / 6.45 = 14.31
